Family Science Nights consist of exhibits initially designed by SME faculty member Dr. Mary Urquhart, and later by other faculty and students as well, to transform local school cafeterias into informal science education experiences. Hundreds of students and their families have participated in each of these events held at schools in Allen ISD, Dallas ISD, Plano ISD, Richardson ISD and Wylie ISD.

Science Nights were often facilitated by UT Dallas student volunteers and other faculty and staff members. Resources have been loaned to numerous teachers for use in both formal and informal experiences. Science Night interactive exhibits have been used as components in many other departmental outreach activities.
