Partnerships with Informal Institutions

Partnerships with the Perot Museum of Nature and Science go beyond students assisting as staff for camps. An Alamosaurus discovered in 1999 in Big Bend National Park by a UTD student – on a field trip led by Dr. Montgomery – is on display at the museum. More information on the discovery on the Lajitas page.

Dr. Urquhart was featured in an exhibit on women in science at the Science Place, one of the Dallas museums that joined together to form the Perot. Dr. Urquhart was also a content expert for the Perot’s Universe Gallery, working closely with museum personnel and Amaze Design on the development of the exhibit concepts and content.

Other partnerships with informal institutions include SME faculty, staff, and students hosting hands-on activity booths at Earth Day celebrations, most recently with the Dallas Arboretum. SME/UTeach Dallas students have worked closely with the Sci-Tech Discovery Center from heading up the education department to running summer camps.

Additional Outreach

Faculty, staff, and students have designed and provided hands-on experiences for school groups and scouting troops on and off campus.

SME -UTeach Dallas has participated in the “TI Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day” for several years now with science and math interactive activities.

Family Science Nights consist of exhibits in which the faculty and students of the SME department transform school cafeterias into informal science education experiences. Hundreds of students and their families have participated in each of these events held at schools in Allen ISD, Dallas ISD, Plano ISD, Richardson ISD, and Wylie ISD.

Please consider making a gift to support all of our SME Department outreach and programs.
